Should I make offer?

A neighbor has a early '90's 17 Phantom Bass Boat with a early '90's 85hp Evinrude. It has sat on his drive way uncovered for over 5 yrs. Never moved. What a shame.
My question is other than the floor and interior problems - what about the engine and transom. I know one of the worst things for the outboard is to just sit.
I would appreciate the opinions and pointers.

Mark

Re: Should I make offer?

A nearly 15 year old boat sitting in the Texas sun for 5 years? The Gelcoat is toast, literally. I'd also suspect the transom being rotted. Go to the rear of the boat, put your foot on the top of the lower unit and start pushing up and down while another person observes the transom, I'm betting you'll see flex. The floor will most probably be rotten as well as stringers, carpet, electrics and electronics, Upholstery on the seats, etc, etc. What condition is the trailer in? The tires will need to be replaced as well as the spare due to dry rot. Bearings regreased. Check everything.

I'd also take the engine to a qualified mechanic as well to be checked out.

Phantom was a pretty unknow boat company. The value is minimal. No more than $1,000 total. The only way I'd make an offer is if absolutely had to have that boat. It'll take a lot of work and the resale value of a Phantom boat will be poor.

I think you're right Cart. Is there any way to check condition of the stringers? Gelsoat is rough- especially top surfaces. Is that just cosmetic or is it a structural issue?

Any thoughts about the outboard?

Thanks Again,
Mark

Re: Should I make offer?

Sitting out, completely exposed to the elements like that well, if the floor is soft in spots or all over I'd pretty much plan on the stringers being gone.

As for the motor. There aren't many motors out there that can sit for 5 years and not have problems with gaskets n such dry rotting. I'd probably want to overoil the gas before I started that thing. Your water pump impeller may have problems as well.

Take the motor to a mechanic.

You've lost all the Gelcoat and now you're down to the metalflake. Not a structural problem but mucho $$ to get it in even somewhat presentable condition.
