I've been following a thread on the Merc outboard forum. About water separator filters and if you really need one. I have a 2001 75hp Merc 2 stroke on my pontoon and I'm sure there's a filter on the motor but I don't have the seperate canister type water separator filter. I bought the pontoon this fall and haven't run a full tank (12 gal.) through it this year. I did add 5 gals. to a half tank (with Seafoam) and topped it off with another 5 when I pulled it out for storage. Probably only ran 10 gals. or so this year. Another thing is I always use 91 octaine nonoxygenated (no ethanol) fuel. I have no idea what the last owner used.
Anyway, I have to put a new livewell pump on in the spring and I thought I'd put a water separator filter on too. Is that a good idea? Are the canisters all the same thread size? If I put one brand kit on can I use a different brand of filter or do I have to use their brand filter? Is one brand kit/filter better then another? Appreciate your thoughts and any help you can give me on this subject.
