Should I repaint?

Do you think it will be worth repainting my 14.5ft Glastron? I bought it for $500 including trailer and motor. I have been working on the motor all winter and now have it working great. I want to get the outside of the boat looking good now. If you go to the website below you can see pictures of the boat. It has alot of small holes in the fiberglass inside the boat and on top. Does anyone think it will be worth fixing the holes then sanding and painting? If so could I just take the motor off and flip the boat over and paint the bottom then do the top? Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Should I repaint?

I would first try to polish it and remove the oxidized gelcoat. You would be amazed at how much difference it will make. Painting would be my last resort. I think you just need to invest some elbow grease and she will look great. Do a search on the topic there are alot of posts on how to do it.

Have a great day,

Rob.

Is it worth it to you to have a new, fresh looking boat?
Painting a boat is a lot of work. Preparing for the new paint takes time.
I have been working on restoring a 1966 Powercat since October. I just flipped the hull over and am working on the bottom. Found many sprider cracks in the gel and many bubbles in the paint. I am in the middle of a complete paint strip and grinding of the gell coat. Do you have maybe 2 months to spend on a repaint? I alway wonder where do you stop. Do you replace all damaged chrome pieces? Now it needs new carpet. Hows the helm? Do you need new gauges? Now you completely stripped the hull and are in the middle of a complete restoration and $2000 down the road.

Is it worth it to you to have a new looking boat?

Re: Should I repaint?

To me it depends most on how long I plan to own the boat and how damaged the finish is. Doing a quality paint job is allot of work and it often leads to other things. Having a fresh paint job makes every other defect or bad looking part look much worse.
I started work on my Revelcraft as a hobby after my daughter was born. I intended to do a paint job and generally fix the boat up until our finances stabilized allowing us to put it back in a slip. Here it is two years later and I have another year or so before the restoration is "complete" enough to suit me.
I have to admit I have done this kind of restoration before and it always ends up being more work than initially intended. To me its worth it, but it takes a big commitment. I would advise making the decision to paint or not to paint knowing that often a simple paint job ends up not being enough. And it always takes a real commitment to finish the work.

When using the rubbing compound should I remove my registration numbers or just go over them?

Matt, I would remove them. Blade them off, and use acetone to remove it all. If you still have persistent yellow, use a cleaner to get rid of them. You will be happy you did. BTW, I think that hull will buff out great.
