Should I Tear Down Lower Unit?

I'm completely overhauling a LONG disused '81 Evinrude 140.

I've disconnected and drained the lower unit, and am replacing the impellar.

My question is: Should I go through the effort of COMPLETELY tearing down the lower unit/gearcase?

Is it likely that I will find worn consumables... gaskets, o-rings, etc. that need to be replaced, or other likely-to-fail parts that should be replaced? I don't want to go through all the work if I'm just going to end up taking it apart and putting it right back together as it was.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!!

Don't fix it if it isn't broken.

Unless there is something obviously leaking or otherwise wrong with it, I would go ahead and use it. After the first couple of trips, crack the bottom drain screw and note the color of the oil. If it is noticeably white in color, then some seals may be in order. If the oil is pretty close to the color it was when you filled it, enjoy your boat!
