I already talked about the transom being soft and how to fix, i could do it myself but i do not have any time. like i said before in topics(transom replacement in fiberglass) and (did i pay to much)they want $1650 to do the work. remove the transom from the outside, redo the fiberglass and match the metal flake. the marina said it will be stronger than new. but the question is, should it be done from the outside. im just nervous doing it that way . what do your fiberglassers think. also anyone that had the repairs none that way how did it turn out? should i be nervous?

is there any industry standard for warranties for this type of work like one year, two year?

would it be rude to take pics during the procedure for my reference?

any other suggestions would be great. he's going to start wednesday.

how do i protect myself from crappy work.

giving myself a headache

Re: should it be fixed from the out side

I've never done it but a friend of mine did. He split the upper from the lower (remove rub rail). Cut his from the inside replaced the wood and then reglassed, strong as ever. It seems like this would be the way to go as you don't mess with the outside finish. To someone who is more qualified, maybe the external approach would be quicker (time equals money when hiring it done). I'd be worried about the exterior match though.

DougV>

Dak, if your astroglass is similar to mine on the transom set up I would be curious to see how they would do it from the outside. On my set up just the motor mount area would be accessible. the transom runs the width of my boat, the two outside edges are filled with foam and more plywood for the tow cleats, then the transom is outside of this. Also there are two floatation pillars on the outside edges that cover the transom, and need to be removed in order to get to the transom edges on the hull. you've seen my project site and the width of the old transom, so I would question them on that. Other than that if they are a reputible shop then they should know what they are doing.

First - It is a good idea to keep related posts together. I read your other post but do not want to go hunting for it now.

As to the transom - I would not let them do it from the outside. That would require them to cut not only the gel coat but the outer fiberglass skin.

One of the ways to protect yourself from crappy work is to observe them while they are doing it and to take pictures (if they protest the pictures I would stop the job). Go to the Restoration section here at iboats and read your brains out about replacing transoms. As you observe them working on your boat and if something doesn't seem right ask them to explain the "what's & why's".

I had mine done a couple of years ago (23'er)& followed that process. I think they respected my interest and did a great job.

Re: should it be fixed from the out side

coldfire,

the transom is somewhat recessed were the motor mounts. the marina is fixing the motor and out sourceing the glass work. i did ask the marina if the fiberglass guy said anything about the wood going the full width of the boat and they said he would be doing the work from the outside. i do not yet have the phone number for the glasser. i will contact the marina to have him call me before he cuts, so i can get an idea of what he is going to do.

any questions i should ask ?

i would put a picture up but im not sure how. i tried some of the suggestions but still have trouble.
can you help? i dont spend much time on the computer so i need an easy way. i also have slow dial up.

solittle,
sorry for the mess. im still learning this site. is there any easy way to keep them together. can't wait to go fishing with the kids.

crab bait,
as far as i know it is ply wood and it is inside fiberglass. the marina said he had the metal flake to match. and that he did not want to go from the inside. it looks like to me that it would not be any harder to just remove about 1.5 feet of the deck in back and remove only that part and do everything from inside and topside. im not to worried about a perfect match as long as is strong and safe

any one,
how about the warranties?

sorry im not a spelling major
thanks

doug
