I have a 1988 sweetwater pontoon and I removed the 2 plugs in the top of each toon and they have 3/16 holes drilled in them. The holes dont look factory it this correct?

Pontoons have vent holes that serve a couple of purposes. When they are made, they are pressure tested using these holes. Also, pressure in pontoons will vary with temperature. These allow excess pressure to escape.

these plugs are the type with a recessed square hole for a 3/8 ratchet and the hole is drilled in the bottom of this recess so any small amount of after that gets in the top of this plug will go in. if they are to have vented plugs im at least going to use a plug that takes a wrench so it will be flat on top

I build new pontoon boats and we use vented plugs, they have a very small 1/16'' hole in them for the reason mentioned.

The boats are built in Indiana and if that boat is going to Florida somewhere else really hot you can get quite alot of pressure built up from the heat.
