Hi all,
A few days ago I posted a message regarding the cooling system on my 1973 65HP Evinrude. I got a few good replies (Thanx guys).By the way, this motor is new to me.........

Where I'm at now is that there is a steady stream of water coming from the small V shaped drain notch at the FWD portion of housing right where it mates w/ the LWR unit when the engine is running. I had just replaced the pump. The following are things that I checked and/or noticed.

Water is circulating thru entire system, coming out both the exhaust reliefs and the outlets below cav. plate.

I measured how far the tube should fit into the pump housing (that has a new grommet) when assembled and it should be ok.

I pulled LWR end and hooked a hose to the end of tube (that attach to pump) and ran water at low pressure w/ the thermostat removed and cover on. Once the system is full, water starts gushing up near where the the tube comes out. I think it"s coming from a 1/2" or so hole up there. Hard to see while getting splashed w/ water and using a flashlight.

Basically, the housing is filling up w/ water at a pretty good rate and I'm left scratching my head.

Any ya'all seen this before ??????????

Re: SHOULD'NT BE COMING OUT OF THERE !!!

There are a few weep (drain back)holes in the water pump body on most pumps. These weep holes will leak water especially when running on pressured hose. Maybe what you're seeing is the leakage from weep holes making its way to the drain holes in the housing? How does it do off the hose?
Another failure I've seen happen is someone will install the L/U without lining up the water tube. This can put a bend in the tube making it difficult to install properly later (too short resulting in leak). Measure the depth of the tube compared to the height of the water pump outlet. There should be atleast 3/4-1" fit. Lube the end of the tube and pump outlet with dishsoap when installing L/U. (grease attacks some rubbers and sticks around too long attracting sand). If you're still uncertain, and you can't sleep at night......install a water-pressure gauge.

Good luck!

Thanks scematic,
I'll double check how much of the tube will enter the pump housing.
This happens while running in a tank. But with the test I did, all the "excess" water is coming down from the area where the tube goes to the engine. There is a bit of a joggle in the tube (bent?) I looked up there and it looked like a real nightmare to remove the tube. Do you think the powerhead would have to be removed ? Also, do these tubes have a small hole in them for a relief drain, mine has one as some of the water coming down is from that.

Dazed and confused...........

The tubes are made with a bend. Did you relace the pump housing, or just the impellar? Did you replace the gaskets and o-rings? Maybe you're over-reacting? Try it in the lake and see if it over-heats, or put in a pressure gauge.

Good luck!

Yup, it was a set (housing, impeller, seals & gaskets).
I'm just worried that with all the water filling up the case above the LWR unit, where will it go when that drain notch can not handle it all.
I bet if I crack a cold one, I'd figure it out...........Thanks

RH
just thought of something......did you apply gasket maker on the L/U housing where it meets the drive shaft housing? Its a long shot, but there is a chance of water leaking in to pump area via the outlet at rear...

Not too shabby, schematic.
I tried to paste an arrow to where the water is coming down on your view, but it would'nt work.If you know a way I can insert something on your dwg. let me know so I can point to exactly where the water is coming down.
No I did not use sealer anywhere between LWR end and exhaust housing.
Maybe I should lay down a coat of sealer between upper/lwr and try again....

Much appreciate your efforts.....

I can e-mail the the drawing, you add to it and e-mail it back to me.....I think you should again apply the water-hose to the tube and slowly apply pressure till you see exactly where it comes from. Don't forget, it come from a couple of places. If it just comes out of what appears to be normal outlets......don't worry about it.(you could be chasing your tail) It almost appears to be coming on top the pump in the diagram. Be sure the grommet at the bottom of the exhaust tube is intact.

whats your e-mail?
