I accidently shut off my engines (Mercruiser 4.3L I/O with Alpha I sterndrive) while in idle. I thought the gear was in neurtal. The boat coasted for about 60 seconds. I realized something was wrong I heard a a sound coming from the stern which was the propellers turning from the force of the water as the boat coasted to a stop while still in gear. Once I put it back in neutral the engines started right up and I was able to return to my marina with no apparent problem that I could detect. Could I have damaged anything in the sterndrive? Should I be checking anything? Dumb mistake on my part.

Yeah, it's designed to do that. You should be fine.

No problem.
I had to do this with mine for four years before I finally got around to replacing the shift cable !!!
