Good morning guys,

Sad story, I loaned by 1978 9.9 evinrude to a buddy. He had it for two days. He was using it in salt water and dicided to do me a favor and run fresh water thru it to flush the salt when it came back. The problem is he did not turn the hose on when he fired it up. The phone rang so he was not paying attention and you can figure the rest.

When I got it back one cylinder would not fire. Did compression test, bottom hole 90 psi, top hole 60. I pulled it apart last nite, bottom hole shows a little pick up on piston and a pretty good wall, upper hole is shot, new piston and bore job required.

Here is the question. Would you guys put $400 to $500 in this one or would you buy a new unit? I found a sale at Ed's Marine in VA for $1700 for new unit. What do you think? I am going for some R&R in a week and a half and need the motor for fishing and crabing. I can most likely have the old repaired by then but don't know if it is worth it.

the 79 is probably worth what you are going to have to put into it to repair it, by the time you count your labor. part it out, and recoup part of the new motor, i think i would also suggest to my friend for a donation, as it was complete negligence on his part.

Re: Sick 9.9

tash thanks for the reply. I've owned this motor for about ten years, it has ran flawlessly, just done normal maintenance: water pump, decarb, plugs, etc. Around here a 9.9 in very good running condition can be gotten for $500, that is why I am hesitant to put $500 in it. I've never had a brand new outboard motor but I think I have the bug.

Re: Sick 9.9

buy another used 9.9 of about the same era and keep the other one as spare parts....and your buddy should pay the full meal deal price on the new used motor methinks.
Thats one of the reasons I hate to loan tools, boats, motors and girlfriends..they never come back in the same shape they left in :)

I would have brought my check book along when I returned that engine. In fact! I think I would have just brought the check book.

If you've go the time and the energy, by all means rebuild the one you've got. You know the full history and service record. You'll have a brand new motor for $500 and some time.

My buddy called and said he found a 15 hp for $700 in great shape and he is going to buy it for me. I'll believe it when I see it.

Re: Sick 9.9

Well my buddy just left. He brought me a 1985 15 hp Johmson. He says he got the guy down to $600. We hooked up muffs and it fired on the first pull. This bad boy sounds like twice the motor the 9.9 ever did. The r's crank up almost as fast as a dirt bike. I'm happy so far. My friend says he will never borrow another motor as long as he lives, I said atleast not from me.

Now, to return the gesture of good will you should offer him the other motor and some help in rebuilding it, if he's so inclined.

He essentially bought it after all.

All seems to have ended up well. You got a newer better motor for a weeks worth of stress. BTW, did you run a compression check on the 15hp? What are the #'s like? And I agree, give the old 9.9 to the buddy to do with as he pleases...

Just checked compression at 100 and 105. My buddy did not want the old motor, I offered it to him.
