I have a 1997 Merc 175 EFI Offshore. Oil inj has been bypassed. After my last shiftrod replacement ( dont ask ) I put in and ran out for about 10 minutes and anchored. An hour later I moved about one half mile and stopped again. When I attempted to leave this time, after applying full throttle the engine shut down as though the key had been turned off. Weeks later it happened after leaving the launch. Cranked OK, idled OK but when full throttle applied it died. No beep no nothing. A few minutes later it cranked and I idled back to the truck. I have done little or no troubleshooting yet. A mechanic whom I explained the trouble to cleaned the water from the fuel tank, replaced the plugs and ran injector cleaner. Havent had it in the water yet since but I dont have a warm fuzzy about this. Loss of electrical power to the engine/ignition doesnt seem related to what he did even though it needed it I'm sure. The boat is 1997 Boston Whaler Dauntless 20. Did the last mechanic to change the shiftrod loosen something or is this something obvious?

Re: Sick Merc

You need to do a proper troubleshoot and figure out what is shutting down,ie is it only ignition or fuel pump too and if so, is the power to the ecm failing indicating a power input failure.Connecting a DDT whist running will do the trick,if the power is shut off completely the data list on the DDT will also black out.You have to do this to narrow down where to start looking.

Re: Sick Merc

You do say that water was removed from the fuel tank. This would be problem enough to make the motor quit running...
