side mounted recoil how to rewind??

Yep you guesssed it rope snapped. In past I've always been able to tie a new one on and it has rewound.
This time I need to tighten up spring and rethread new rope. Spring not broken.
1962 vintage Chrysler.
There has to be a quick fairly simple easy way to do this...
HELP PLEASE!!
