I am redoing side panels for the open bow area. The old has three pieces of foam two different colours will change to one piece of foam and one colour. I think the foam is 2" thick does that sound right doing this because no sewing involed just staple and fold Thanks for any advice the upholstery is original 1986.

You'll need to use 2 layers of something so the vinyl at the plywood edge is not a hard edge, if it's a hard edge the vinyl can get scrapped up easily at the hard spot. On my old boat, I used a layer of foam (3/4"?) on the face of the plywood only, then a layer of batting (3/4"?) on the face of the plywood that wrappedt around the edges to the back of the panels.

duplicating that original look is not as hard as you might think, just add a tufting strap to the seam allowance on the angled seams and that allows you to staple it down then add the other 2 peices of foam and pull all that tight...

the strap I speak of is like this, but in your case you would need one on each seam of the center piece

JDA, thanks for the reply but I do want a one piece side panel will have the seats redone I cannot sew so if I can put one piece of material on the side panels can do. Plus also trying to grandkids proof the uphostery and carpet papas boat is a fun boat (7yr.s to 20 months) Thanks for the reply plus pricing sewing machines and buying 101 sewing books now.:)

feel free to hollar if you run into a snag, sewing isn't as hard as you would think, a year ago, I sewed my own project boats seats...now I own an upholstery shop lol...you will enjoy it, careful measurements and straight lines are key, but a seam guide for whatever machine you buy, run the stitch slow and keep it against the guide, you should have no problems!
