Silly newbie question

Hey folks so i have a question that may just be completely silly to those of you who know boats.

Does the engine rotation have to match the propeller rotation?

I have an Alpha One Gen 2 stern drive and it says that i have a LH ( i assume this means counter clock wise) engine rotation. And when in input the prop part number 48-832832a45 into the part finder it tells me its a standard (clockwise) prop. So to me, not knowing if this is normal, i question if this is an incorrect prop on the boat. Keep in mind i just bought the boat and haven't taken it out yet.

Thanks-

Re: Silly newbie question

"A note about ROTATION
Do not confuse engine rotation with sterndrive or propeller rotation
ALL sterndrive Mercruiser Engines are left hand (standard, counterclockwise) rotation.
Most single engine boats use a right-hand rotation drive unit meaning that
the propeller rotation is right-hand (standard, clockwise) rotation.
Counter rotating drives are left-hand (counter, counterclockwise) propeller rotation.
Counter rotating drives have only been around in numbers for the last few years.
The advantage of having two drives rotating in opposite directions are
increased speed, improved slow and high speed handling, better course tracking,
more level ride, improved fuel economy and easier docking."

Re: Silly newbie question

Not to nit pick, Mercruiser CR drives have been readily available and used for 20+ years.

A CR drive - only the lower is needed, the uppers are the same... Can be readily installed in a RH std rotation by changing the shift cable/controls push pull and it would, of course, then use a left hand prop.

Can you just look at the existing prop? On a single screw, it would be rare for someone to change it, but you didn't mention what boat/engine it's going on.
