'89 OMC 4.3L

ESA/shift iterrupt switch/etc. ground wire ends in a ring terminal. Connects to the bracket assembly with a lock washer (the kind with sharp points), regular washer, and nut (bolt comes through the bracket assembly from the other side).

Question is, in what order should these be connected? When I pulled it off to clean the connection, the lock washer was snug to the bracket, followed by the ring terminal, followed by the regular washer, and lastly the nut. Is this correct? Seems like you'd want the ring terminal flush against the bracket to get as much surface contact as possible. Or is there an advantage to having the points of the lock washer 'digging' into the bracket as well as the grounding ring terminal?

I checked the parts manual and it shows the two washers & the nut, but not where the ring terminal fits in between the washers....

Maybe another dumb question, but I'm learning, honest!

Re: simple grounding question

the star washer is supposed to dig into both parts that need to make good electrical contact..

trog100

Re: simple grounding question

Thanks guys. I'll have to go back & check other ground terminals I've disconnected & cleaned (like the main engine ground) just to be sure I reconnected them correctly.

Re: simple grounding question

your surface area logic was sound thow lakelivin.. if both surfaces that need to make good electrical contact are genuinely clean.. the star washer is probably of negative value as regards the passage of electrical current..

its only of real value when the surfaces aint clean..

just to confuse the issue.. he he

trog100
