87 OMC Cobra 120 I need help setting the interrupter switch. I am following the manual but I am lost on which cable I should be adjusting and when, such as red for forward and black for reverse and so on.The book states that the roller should be in the "V" notch in neutral, and in the forward throttle position as well as reverse. I have it in the notch in neutral, push throttle to forward and the roller is not in the notch, so I adjust the black cable until the roller falls into the notch. I then bring it back to neutral to check and its not in the notch.. I need some clear instructions or clear pics. Thanks all for any help

That's not how you adjust these. To do it properly, the drive needs to be pulled off and you need to use 2 special tools to adjust. Instructions are in the service manual. An 87 service manual will not have the correct procedure since the tools didn't come out until later. The manual up in the stickies will have it though since it is for a 1990.

Also, when the roller is in the notch in neutral and you shift into forward or reverse, the roller will end up back in the notch provided your cable is not failing. If it doesn't, you need to replace the cable. To observe this behavior, the engine has to be running. the reason it doesn't fall back would be becuase the cable is binding in the housing.

The boat was running and engaging fine last year after a buddy of mine adjusted. Now the issues are when putting it into gear it sputters and wants to or does kill off. I did replace the switches.

The ESA shouldn't be engaging going into gear anyway. That's the sign of a failing cable. That being said, once you complete your shift, the overthrow switch should turn off the ESA and you won't have any more stumbling. If you are, maybe its just your engine.

As a test, unplug your ESA and see if it stumbles still. If it does, its a carb issue or other issue. Just do this in the middle of the lake so you can turn your engine off after doing the test because it will be close to impossible to get it out of gear without the ESA plugged in.

I bet your buddy didn't adjust it right either! :)
