Re: Simple question - deadrise

It's a measurement of the angle at the transom in which the hull 'V' rises. The more deadrise, the deeper the 'V'. Basically, the deeper the 'V' the smoother the boat will ride through the waves but it requires more power to push through the water than the same boat with less deadrise. There's other handling characteristics that are different but the ride is the main one.

Re: Simple question - deadrise

not sure why you asked, but be careful comparing boats by just their "listed" deadrise. i've seen some advertise a higher deadrise, but they measure it closer to the bow and not at the transom. above post was right on- higher the deadrise, usually smoother ride in chop. but higher deadrise, usually less stability. but it's all relative and many more factors play in performance of a boat. that's why so many manufacturers put out so many hull styles every year. take care-

To add a little more to the above.... Deadrise is stated in degrees and measures the angle between the bottom of a boat (at the transom) and a flat plane touching the base of the hull or keel. Using this method, the measurements should be reasonably consistent.

Boats with deep "V" hulls probaly have a deadrise of 24-26 degrees. Medium "V" hulls have a deadrise of less than 24 degrees but more than 18 or 19 degrees. And finally a deadrise of less than 16 degrees is considered low. Fletter bottom boats approach zero.

Lower deadrise decreases handling, particularly at lower speeds, but requires less power to get on plane. Deep "V" hulls handle rougher waters well but require more power to plane.

Thanks, everyone.
mattttt25, the reason I asked is that I've seen it mentioned a lot on the forum and didn't have a clue what it was all about. Makes sense now.
