most if not all the guys I know that have islanders have 9.9 or 15 hp kickers.with 15 hp being the more prevalent.that little Nissan will have a hard time getting you out of trouble.
Better go minimum for a Nissan/Tohatsu 9.8 kicker, portable enough and with punch. A 3.5 is too basic, will take you there provided that water is near flat, non windy and without strong currents to deal with.
Also the small single cylinder 4 strokes are very annoying to troll with, they are louder and tend to vibrate much more than a larger 2 cylinder motor.
Well I got a Yamaha 2 stroke 8 hp I can use. Just figured a four stroke could run off the same tank and not need an extra tank. Also the speed and steering controller's are all made for a 4 stroke for some reason. May just go with a steering link and leave it at that. Least until I can afford a minn kota 101 with I pilot. LOL! Just trying to think it all out till i can actually do some thing when the weather gets right.
I have a 22' Islander with a 9.9 which works great, your 8 hp will work but that should be minimum, the 3hp will be disappointing at best. Any wind at all and you will be going the wrong way. If it were a sail boat model you could get away with it as they are geared differently and propped different to push heavy loads but a standard 3hp would be to weak.
Those Nissan/Tohatsu 3.5 HP comes with standard delivered props, if wanting to push heavy loads as sailboats more efficiently will need to change prop. That's on the 2 stroke models, probably same on the 4 stroke ?
Well Just a thought. Had a good deal on one so I was wondering. Guess i'll keep my Yamaha 8HP tiller. 2 stroke. Will hook it to main motor. Would be nice if i could control the throttle from the captains chair. But I see there all made for 4 strokes. Since its just for trolling guess we will just pull start and adjust speed at the motor.
