Looking to buy a beautifully kept boat, even the trailer is exceptional. However, it is but a single axle, and the boat is a 21 foot cuddy. Will this be alot of added tongue weight? And is it safer to have brakes on the trailer? thx...new to boating. mom of 6

Re: single or double axle trailer???

Howdy, Mom.

In many ways single axle trailers are easier to use than tandems. The issue is the weight capacity of the trailer, tires, axle and springs.

It is also important that your tow vehicle is rated for the weight of the package and for 5 to 7% of the towed weight on the tongue.

Example: Suppose the trailer has an axle, wheels, tires and springs that are good for 3500lb. and has brakes. That should handle most 25' boats. Your tow vehicle should be rated to tow at least 5,000lb and your hitch should be a class III with a tongue weight capacity of at least 300lb.

That's the best I can do without knowing more about the boat, the trailer and your tow vehicle, but I hope it helps.

Good luck. :)

Re: single or double axle trailer???

A lot depends on your tow vehicle and where you do boating. For example if you have a big truck with dual rear wheels, drive short distances and the roads you usually travel on are relatively flat, then you can probably get by with a single axle without brakes. On the other hand - -

Most boats over 19' or so are on dual axle trailers. The number of axles has little to do with tongue weight.

And yes it is safer to have trailer brakes than not. Drum brakes are a pain if you have to dunk your trailer at the ramp. They rust and fail quickly particularly if dunked in salt water. I finally replaced my drums with disk brakes and anticipate far less problems.

Re: single or double axle trailer???

Thanks for the prompt responses. My 30 ft travel trailer weights 5,400 lbs,so now I know I will have no trouble pulling this particular boat. I drive a 1 ton, 3500 series V8 15 passenger Chevy Express Van. A bit nervous about our first boat transaction, But excited. Thanks again.
