Allrighty, here goes. My 17'6 bass boat has a 115 v4 1996 johnson fast strike notor. it currently has a single steering setup, but it's now shot and needs replacing. It seemed to do just fine with the single setup. Should I opt for the doubleor do you think the single will be just as good. I am concerned about the price difference. Any opinions??

Re: Single or Double setup?

You didnt mention what speed youre running or the hull type but since its a bass boat we'll assume its a pad bottom.

Lets further assume that the boat runs 50 with you and your wife/girlfriend/son/daughter/best friend on board.

Your main concern is price, not safety.

The two of you are cruising along and BAM! The steering breaks. A tooth in the rack breaks -- whatever. The boat takes a sharp 90 degree left turn. It somehow doesnt barrel roll. You have the steering wheel to hang on to but your passanger doesnt. He/she goes flying out of the boat. He/she is in mid air.

Freeze frame!!

Right now what is your main concern? Money?

Your answer will tell you which to buy.

Re: Single or Double setup?

It is a v-hull alluminum bass boat which does not go above 48 mph. The safety of all on board is always considered, please do not doubt me on that. The question is this. If it was single from the factory, would it be feasible to replace it with a stock single unit once again or was the factory made stock steering setup installed without any concern for family and friends?

Re: Single or Double setup?

As this is not an engine trouble and is an issue of concern to all outboarders, I am moving it to General Outboard.
