Would like to know your opinion on setting up twin outboards. My 14' boat is rated to 65hp, and currently has a 18hp outboard w/controls. Wanted to go up in HP and thought it would be trick to have a set of twin screws on the back.

What hurdles to I have to face?? I know I will new remote control. My biggest concern is with prop rotation. I don't feel that weight will be a problem.

Thanks for the advice.

JR

Why bother with the problem of two engines. Install one 65 and go faster more efficiently than two smaller 30's with half the problems. If its just the "cool" you want, break out the wallet and go for it. You'll need to steer both of them so you need the appropriate link to tie the two engines together as well as controls to operate two throttles and shifters. Counter rotation won't be an issue with the small engines.

with controls twice the cost, 2 X maint, 2 X gas, probably 1 1/2 X the weight. with a 14' boat i doubt your'e going offshore, so you don't need 2 for safety. this is a lot of 'twice' to look cool. i think you will get better performance with the 65hp.

Performance obviously isn't the goal, safety is called for in other places besides offshore, and I think it'd look neat! Dual controls that don't dwarf your console will probably be your hardest acquisition. I wouldn't worry about prop rotation with twin 18s, set the trim tabs and go for it!

Counter rotation won't be to bad on such a small boat with small engines, but I will also suggest one big engine instead of 2 that needs to be maintained and serviced etc.

It would be very cool to have a twin motor setup and I doubt it would be dificult or expensive. You could add a match to your existing 18hp engine or get two larger ones. Chief

Not that bad, or hard, of a job. But I've said it before -- there's only 1 reason to put 2 outboards on. 1 and only 1 reason. There isn't room for 3.

A two engine setup is common use on some of our remote, large northern reservoirs that are like small inland seas. The boats aren't necessarily large because there are many rocks and shallows along the way. Usually you find two 20's or 25's at the back. These are fisherman venturing out to places that are hours away from nowhere and the extra motor is a form of security.

Otherwise, a single engine is much less hassle and would be my preference.
