Single Seat on a Box Instead of a Pedestal

I am thinking of replacing a lounge seat with a single seat in my 19' Sea Ray bow rider. What do you all think about putting it on a box instead of a pedestal? Seems like it would be more sturdy and you would have some added storage space. Plus, I would be glassing the box in instead of screwing a pedestal into my new floor. I am thinking something similar to the seats in richoman's new Starcraft.

I was thinking of doing the same thing, but was wondering if the box would a hassle for your feet. tripping and running your toes into it. Would have to make sure your feet could still comfortably be resting on the floor..Not half on the box ??? A couple of thoughts.

Your idea is identical to mine. I have been looking for some used previously, or a possible dock step box.

I have some extra plywood, glass, and resin from my restore. I may see what I can put together. Regarding Paul's concern, I would make sure the seat hangs over a few inches like the current lounge seat does. Would I have to buy a small pedestal to mount the seat to the box or can I mount the seat straight to the box? Looks like they are mounted straight to the box in Richoman's SC.

I did mine that way, built a four sided box, glassed to floor inside and out, glassed the top on and stuck a locking hatch on it. Works great and not in the way of your feet at all. I did put a rotator on the seat and that made it a lot easier to mount the seat.

sqbtr, I get it, so it can swivel. Do you have any pictures?

Re: Single Seat on a Box Instead of a Pedestal

The only possible issue is access to the inside of the box structure while mounting your seat (I'm assuming you're going to bolt it down and not just screw into the top of the box). My Checkmate had seat boxes originally so during the rebuild process I exactly duplicated what came from the factory. These particular boxes are pretty small and it was a total pain in the #$# to reach in and get locknuts onto the bolts, I wish I'd have fabricated some short pedestals instead and glassed a piece of wood to the deck with T-Nuts on the backside for mounting them. In your case it might not be an issue, and it does sound like a good idea for adding storage.
