Sink or Swim? The engine debacle...

Hello all, this is my first post of what I hope becomes a lengthy stay.

I got a Larson DC 190 I/O from a friend and had it stored at my folks house while I moved from one state to another. Well, they needed the garage space and took the boat out back on a hill, put a tarp on it and went about their business without telling me. When I went to retrive the boat it looked like it was doing a wheelie on the trailer.

They had neglected to take out the plug and the water built up until the boat became back heavy and lifted up in the air.

The water sat there I'm guessing for about a month or two by the looks of it so after I drained it and cleaned it up I took it down to the marina to let them check it out.

They confirmed my fears and said that I need a fully-dressed engine and they are offering a 4.3L v-6 VORTEC for the tune of $6200 (that includes parts and labor).

Here is my question - 1) does that sound like a legitimate price?

I have searched all over the internet and not really founf anything that answers my question. The rest of the boat seems to be in good shape and I am leaning towards doing this but being new to this I just want some confirmation that I'm not being suckered...

Thanks in advance.

Why buy new, when you can rebuild the old one and keep dumping money into your new toy. I missed the part about how you drained the thing, put in new fluids and tried to start it.

They are offereing a warranty (1 lousy year) but everything else will be new - alternator, pumps, starter, etc....The old engine was rusted and water (fresh) was in all the electrical systems mentioned above for at lease a month. I've just about talked myself into it but I just want to know if I'm missing something or if I'm getting taken to the cleaners...

I littel more info is needed is that a merc, omc ect

Are they swaping a long block and reuseing you old stuff thats still good ?

Whos motor are they useing

If it got high enough to dammage the motor THEN water got into the gimlble bearing and u-joint bellows for the outdrive :(

OMC - I'll have to check on the motor...which ones are better/worse? It is supposedly a "brand new" motor - not rebuilt..basically everything will be new...no reusing of the old.

The outdrive is a concern of mine as well...

What year is the boat? You have to ask yourself if that boat is worth putting that much money into. There are other options for you.. such as -- having your current motor rebuilt. For $6K, it may be worth taking it to another shop for a 2nd opinion.

did you try draing all the fluids and starting it? if you are going to replace it anyways you can't hurt it anymore. the parts will be about $4000 dollars $1500 is about right for an engine swap in a car, I'm not sure what the labor rate is for a boat.

Details, what year is the boat? What is the condition of everything else? I'd be worried about water intrusion. Did it seep into the foam flotation? How about the transom. Boats are built to keep water out not hold it in. If the water got into the foam and wood framing then rot will ensue if it has not already started. What happened to the cushions etc. Look I feel bad for ya and it's not a total loss, but I'd look hard for a reliable machine shop and price a rebuild. I'd think you could get away for less than $5,000. $1200 will go along way for gas at $4.00 bucks a gallon! And suppose there are other problems you might need that money for.

I just had a reman Jasper 350 put in my boat a couple weeks ago.
The labor was about $2500. It took longer than expected because of extra work switching the old parts to the new engine. I bought a long block. The intake and carb, starter, dist, alternator, PS pump etc get moved from old to new. I almost think it would have been close to buy all new or a fully dressed engine.

They didi a great job. The engine is warranteed for 18 mo and it runs great.

The engine they want to put in is a Crusader.

The boat is a 1987 and everything else on it is in good shape. Up until the stay behind the house it had been stored inside when not in use. The cushions, upholstery, floor, stringers all seem good.

The carpet could stand to be replaced but that is about it.

How do you tell if the water got into the foam?

Just my opinion, but too much money for too old a boat. Find a complete used engine and quote somewhere else.

How deep was the engine in water.(up to half, or over the carb?)

Either way get a second opinion. That's a ton of money on an old boat.

For water logged foam, the only way to tell without ripping out the floor is by knowing the true dry weight of the boat and trailer and then weighing it at a weight station like those for tractor trailers. The difference is water in the foam and wood.

Who are you talking to in the Charlotte area? Sounds kind of high priced.
Check on Jasper Engines site.I think you can get it done cheaper..

That's a chunk of change to put into a 19 y/o boat .... especially with a OMC drive.........IMHO
