sizing a starting battery

I purchased a boat that has a 1989 Johnson 40hp outboard motor. How do I<br />determine what size starting battery to buy? I have a second battery for a<br />trolling motor and this battery can be switched to be parallel with the<br />starting battery.

Motor of that size doesn't draw much. 450 CCA would be more than adequate. Don't be hooking them in parallel unless they are identical size, make and age.....Don't expect the engine to recharge the troller battery either. Do that on shore....with a plug-in charger
