Sizing twin outboards

I am looking at a number of boats for purchase, and in particular a 19' centre console which is a couple of years old with twin Mercury 50HP engines.

We want the boat for general family use, a little skiing (Mono) and for fishing outside the reef (hence the twin engine preference). Unfortuntately on the small indian ocean island we live on boats are not of well known american makes and choice is limited.. so i don't have a lot of the detail to hand which i would normally have when making a choice.

My question is how do twin 50's compare for skiing etc. against, say, a single 115 or 150 with a suitable reserve engine. On the whole, a full twin setup is better here due to the unpredictable nature of the ocean and the total lack of rescue services.

Any thoughts most welcome.

Re: Sizing twin outboards

Hi, Pete.

Welcome to the board.

I would expect twin 50s, correctly propped and in good tune, to perform as well as a single 115 on accelleration and towing skiers, and a single 90 at full throttle.

Good luck :)

I run twin 110hp on a 23' in the Florida Keys and have come home on one more than once. You will not regret twins.
