okay i have been reading for hours and couldnt find this exact problem . so sorry if it has been answered before . i just bought a 1991 skeeter sx175 with a 1988 evinrude 140hp .. i took it out two times with no problems and on the third time i heard a grinding noise when i tried to engage into forward . the boat would just rev up as in neutral then by giving it a lot more throttle it engaged into gear. it hadnt done that before so i didnt think anything of it . i stopped and fished another spot and when i tried to move the boat it wouldnt engage into forward again but this time i could no get it to engage no matter what i did. it makes a clicking/grinding noise that comes from the throttle lever control NOT the motor when i push lever forward to try to put it into gear, it just revs like its in neutral and makes the clicking grinding noise... . i still have reverse and it engages just fine but no foward. also when i got it back to dock i also noticed that my fast idle lever is stuck and will not move while in neutral for some reason. but when i move the throttle lever a little forward were it is between neutral and foward gear it frees the fast idle lever up and am able to move it as normal but in neutral were the fast idle is supposed to work it is stuck as like i have it in gear but its in neutral... help please ... thanks in advance

Remove drain plug on lower unit and inspect gear oil, top it up if need be.-----Disconnect shift cable at the motor and see if it will shift by hand at the motor.

I'm new to outboards. How do you put it in gear at the motor?
