Considering buying a used Skeeter SS17 aluminum boat in my area, but was told by an individual that the Skeeter SS17 was notorious for having a weak weld down the hull. Is this true, and should I stay away from this deal? Thanks.
Some factories used 4043 filler for stressed joints not realizing that this is the weakest filler they could use. In addition, it is also a VERY easy flowing filler to use for unskilled or entry level weldors. If the joint fails it should be rewelded with 5356 filler ONLY and as much of the old filler should be ground away with a 60 grit sanding disk lubbed with some sort of wax grinding lubricant. The 5356 filler is a little more difficult for a weldor to work with but MUCH stronger. That is IF seam cracking is a problem with this boat....
