Replacing my slave solenoid and the new one looks similar to the old except the two small terminals have a letter I and S beside them.
What could this mean? Does it matter which one gets the ground ?

sounds like a cars solenoid. that uses a grounded base. Marine units use the isolated base and do not have the I and S marked terminal

It's a Sierra 18-5801
The two small terminals for the actuation circuit are not the same size, suggesting that there is only one correct way to connect it.

Do you still have points ignition? This typr of relay provides battery voltage to the coil only during the cranking mode energizing one small lug and grounding the base will give you a click that is the S terminal, the other small lug will NOT give a click that is the I terminal

The I should go to Ignition and the S should go to Start, being they are on the small terminals I would put S on the Ground side. Why its marked on the small terminals has got me.

If you put an ohm meter across the terminals, check both directions and see if one side has more or less resistance then the other. If it does it could have a diode across the coil.

You have the right part, Mercs is 853654A1

need to know if its points ign first before grounding any wires.Being a grounded base one will energize the pull in coil and one wont

It's an electronic ignition, Pertronix ML 181 with a Pertonix 40,000v 1.5 ohm coil

Actually he's ordered the wrong number.

OEM part number is 89-853654A1 which crosses over to Sierra number 18-5815 solenoid replaces: Mercury 89-68258A4, 89-853654A1, 89-76545. Correct link, http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Parts-Accessories/dm/keywords.18-5815--searched.1?q=18-5815

Sierra number 18-5801 solenoid replaces: 89-76416A1, 985064. Grounded Base. Incorrect link, http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Parts-Ac...1--searched.1--session_id.409659418&q=18-5801

Thanks!
Wondering if this solenoid is compatible with the electronic ignition and non-points coil I am running?
Pertronix ML 181
40000v 1.5 ohm internal resistor
(Original ballast wire removed)

OK think I answered my own question.
The iboats Mercruiser Solenoids lists the correct one as 18-5815
Thank you for the link to this Fun Times
However if I scroll down the list further it shows again for MIE 330 1977-1980 and and again specs 18-5815 but (16) for standard ignition and lists 18-5836 (26) for electric ignition.
I understand now Bt Doctur
Thanks for this resource, iboats rocks.
(Who knew that replacing with an electronic ignition and coil would require changing the solenoid. Now that I've also replaced my alternator with a 1 wire, wonder if any more gremlins lie in wait?!)
