Re: Slip

so now the obvious question. If i get the rpm's up into 4600 range with the 17p prop do i still have to worry about the engine load ? It would be cheaper to invest in a proper ratio drive than another engine.

Re: Slip

No ^^^^^^ It's just that a 19 or 21 may be better hydro-dynamically. But we're really splitting hairs with that concern. You'll be fine.

Re: Slip

Ok I ran my new 17p prop today and the water conditions were different so i retested the old one too. Just me and a full load of fuel on smooth water no wind.

14.5x19 Solas Rubex Aluminum 3 Blade
Max RPM 4200
Top Speed 46 mph
Slip 10%

14.25x17 Michigan Wheel Apollo Stainless 3 Blade
Max RPM 4500
Top Speed 53 MPH
Slip -8% ???????

Also that is close to the correct range but does this mean I should have gone for the 15P ?

What does that mean ? Is the tach wrong ? Speed is GPS on both counts.

Also if I did get another prop and wanted to try a four blade stainless what pitch would you recommend.

By any chance do you boat in river current? If it is here in this thread, I apologize.

Re: Slip

Nope freshwater lake. No current. I will confirm next time out. Does the engine ecm use the same connection to read rpm as the tach? I guess what I am asking is will the ecm tell me if I am over revving if the tach is reading wrong? It didn't sound like it was turning to fast. Maybe my handy Iphone gps wasn't so accurate :)

Re: Slip

Well sort of. The signal comes from the engine wiring harness, but that doesn't mean the tach is reading it right. The engine has a built in rev limiter though and will not exceed a preset RPM. My guess is around 5300, but not positive. The tach usually has settings for 4, 6 or 8 cyls. That could be wrong, but I would expect it to be off by a percentage at all RPM. Could be junk too...

If it were mine and the numbers above are correct I would go with a 19'
Should put your rpm's right in between 4200-4500
From what I have read on here 4 blades act like one pitch down from what they really are so if you get the 19' four blade it will act kind of like a 18' prop. Im no expert but that is how i understand it.

Re: Slip

They act like 1" pitch up . . . and are usually sold in even numbers because of it ;) Not always.

That's what i was thinking. So if my numbers are accurate ,and I feel like they are even though the math says otherwise , I should get a 16 pitch 4 blade stainless to stay the same or a 15 pitch 4 blade stainless to put me at 4700-4800 max rpm. And I will probly lose about 2-3 mph on top end?

I have a 5.0 mpi with the 1.47 ratio in my Tahoe and I am trying different props as well. Here is what I have gotten so far. RPM's are from the factory tach. I also ran the numbers using the prop. calculator and came with a preferred pitch of 17 but due to the performance I am not convinced. Possibly a different style of propeller is needed.

May 2nd 2012
Factory 19p "black max" aluminum (came with the boat when purchased new)
4500 RPM
52 MPH
3/4 tank of fuel
3 people on board
20 pounds of food, beverages and ice.
50 pounds of gear (anchor, ropes, fisher gear, etc.)
70 degrees outside
water temp of 65 degrees
-----------------------------------------------------
May 2nd 2012
19p Mercury Stainless "Vengeance"
4400 RPM
50 MPH
3/4 tank of fuel
3 people on board
20 pounds of food, beverages and ice.
50 pounds of gear (anchor, ropes, fishing gear, etc.)
70 degrees outside
65 degree water temp
-----------------------------------------------------
June 27, 2012
14.5 x 17p Mercury stainless "Vengeance"
4300 RPM
46MPH
Full tank of fuel (45 gallons)
6 people on board
50 pounds of food and beverages
50 pounds of gear (anchor, ropes, fishing gear, etc.)
2 knee boards
1 wake board
95 degrees outside
90% humidity
80 degree water temp

I should try the 14.25 instead. Maybe a custom prop. is the answer. I will keep trying and let you know.

Re: Slip

That's great information. Do you have Smart Tabs? It sounds like our numbers are similar is the Vengeance prop vented? My Apollo XHS is and the hole shot is great. I will probly just stick with it but I really want to try a four blade. If I do I will be sure and add to this post.

Re: Slip

spdracr39,

I do not have the Smart Tabs but I am thinking about getting them. The Vengenace is not vented. I wanted to try a vented prop myself. If I try it out I will post the results.

Re: Slip

For those of you that consider SmartTabs, and where budget is not the main motivator, I sincerely, seriously, professionally (threw that in) recommend you look into helm adjustable tabs. Best tool you will ever add to a V-hull boat other than the engine/drive ;)
