Keeper has put on some pounds, but being in the giant breed that is normal. Newfy/Lab mix and just over 3 now. He is about 160lbs.

My house has oak flooring and he doesn't do to well trying to run and does very poor on stopping. Usually the wall, table, and door will stop him, chairs won't. He has destroyed 2 of 6 oak chairs. :(

I was noticing that when he is sitting, he constantly is doing his best to keep his front legs from sliding out from under him. Now I know why he prefers to lay down.

My question, Is there any product that I can apply to the pads of his feet to give him some traction? BTW his nails are trimmed and that is not the problem. The floors are just too slippery for him to get good traction/friction. Any Ideas? Thanks......SS

If he stays inside try putting some of that gripper stuff they use for baseball players that may work.My dinning room is like that and i'll throw the ball in there just to watch my dog skate he gets agravated at me when he smacks the wall, pretty funny the look on that dogs face.

He needs a pair on converse.I would not apply anything to his paws because he will lick or chew it off.We have held off on removing carpeting on my stairs and livingroom because my cat loves charging up the stairs as fast as she can and then streaking from one end of the house to the other. It is very heart warming to see how much fun she has.My inlaws removed carpeting from their stairs and it changed their dogs lives. They could no longer go up and down the stairs safely and often took a tumble down. They eventually stopped using the stairs all together and did not seem as happy that way.

We have similar issues with our larger and older lab. She will stand on carpet with tile between her and us and bark to get our attention. The best solution for us has been throw rugs. She uses them like little safety islands, with carefully planned excursions between them . . . ;)

We have a few throw rugs, but when he takes off the rug goes flying in the opposite direction. The steps going to the basement, I have those peel and stick carpet pieces for him. I gotta keep him inside. My last dog "BEAR" was poisoned on our back door step with anti-freeze. Even with my security cameras and lights, I don't want to take a chance of it happening again.

I know that if there was something for the ill fated pooch problem of slippery floors, it will make someone a bunch of money.

Ken, you got something there. The floor could use refinishing which means sanding. Wunder if I used those self sticking DA sandpaper discs and just slapped them on his feet? (Okay, Okay, I'm joking, I wouldn't do that to my buddy!) But maybe my floors would get sanded.

Harbor Freight sells 18'' x 72'' SUPER TOOLMATE NON-SLIP PAD
I use them to hold all kinds of things in place.
IE: when we gave my MIL a DVD player she wanted to set it on top of her tv. So I just cut out a piece the size if the DVD player and layed it on the tv with player sitting on it. NO SLIP for 3 years now!

Since you already have throw rugs cut some to fit your rugs and use tape backed velcro to hold it to the rugs.
Would only cost about 6 bucks to try it

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=47408

Or if you use Kens idea. Ive done this before
Buy a bag of the glass beads used by the highway department to make the center lines shine at night

Was commissioned a few years ago to custom build a set of cedar planked steps so I used that because its clear and let the wood show through.

Your turn now :D

Link, I know about those glass beads. The ones that become loose would be like itsy bitsy ball bearings. Good for dog, but not for us maybe. The flooring is not in the best shape and I do plan to replace it in the future. (when my money tree blooms)

For right now, I think I will get an area rug for the living room and some long runners for the hall way. Those are the areas he likes to run around in. Thanks for the replies...........SS

We bought about 100' of the thin carpet runner they sell at home depot and put it in all of the "high traffic" areas. Figure something out fast because slippery floors are a huge threat to your dogs knees. We know first hand, our little dog blew out her ACL, the doc said the slippery floors were most likely to blame. I would not wish that expense and heartache on anyone.

I think you might have zipped right past a more significant issue. Dogs are not designed to navigate slippery surfaces. Dogs on slippery floors = disaster for the poor dogs hips later down the road. NEVER keep a dog in a home with slippery floors. For the sake of the dog’s health, use throw rugs, carpeting, whatever it takes to give the animal the traction it needs.

Re: Slippery Floors+Dogs

We now have the area rug and carpet runners down. The area rug stays put due to its size. The hallway runner I had to nail down. Grandsons were playing fetch with him and the 26' long runner ended up being pushed up into a ball at the end of the hallway.

Keeper loves it now and has become aware of the rugs and stays on them. Now the sweeper is going to be used more. He doesn't like the sweeper much since he knows now if he pulls the cord out of the wall, it will stop. Bad thing is, he expects a treat from that trick. My wife doesn't think its funny. She just needs to learn to put him on his dog run outside while the floors get swept, I do and it works out great.

Thanks for the concern fellas, it is appreaciated..........SS

Buy 2 pairs of rubber boots, little kid size, and get the dog to adjust to wearing them.

Sliding into walls at high speeds can also result in broken toes...
