Well I figured out why the engine is not starting in the boat. The timing is off bad... So nothing changed and the timing belt must have slipped what is the cause of these belts slipping? It seems alot of threads end in the belt being the problem. What causes these belts toslip. I have a seruos back fire through the car now and will reset the timing tommorrow. But dont want to have the same problem in a week.

No oil is on the belt or contaminates and the belt is brand new.

Re: slipping timing belt.

timing belts are rubber and synthetic braid for strength, and they strech and do not last for ever, replace as per factory spect.

Re: slipping timing belt.

They are toothed belts, they don't slip. For things to be off, it was either installed wrong, or the tensioner is defective and not holding proper tension on the belt to keep the belt in the wheels.
Sometimes they just take a couple of tries to get it right.

Re: slipping timing belt.

the tensioner is not new but I will got get one today. The belt was on right when I installed it because the engine ran solid on the stand and all was well. When I installed the engine I got a back fire and check the timing belt and it was off big time so it must have moved.

I will get a new tensioner today, can I use a b230 tensioner or is it marine specific?

Re: slipping timing belt.

How did you determine it was off "big time"? Did you check the alignment marks on the crankshaft and the camshaft?
