Hello everyone. So I have a Question or two, My 9.5 evinrude Model 9222m, I think its a 1972 slips out of gear when I put it in forward. I can hold it down and it will get me back to the dock but you can feel it trying to pop out. Iv read a lot of other threads dealing with this and will try the spun hup and Have already looked at the lingage which is loose, way loose. It doesn't Clunk into gears like my Johnson 9.9 does, The Johnson is very tight but, not the evinrude at all and I'm not sure what to tighten up on the linkage as it has a lot of play in it.I only see one Bolt on top that Iv adjusted that but it doesn't tighten things up. Anyway since Iv just gotten this boat Iv also noticed The throttle handle Turns all the way to the left (fast) and only halfway to the right (slow) Stopping around the Shift mark. I took it out on the lake and the throttle seemed to work fine Im just wondering why it doesn't turn all the way to the Right like My 1975 Johnson 9.9 does. I should just use the Johnson but we think it needs a new fuel pump and not sure they still make them or they are probably to much $$ Thanks. Also any Ideas on me selling these two Motors for parts, the motors them self work great on both of them just Fuel pump, Lingage and smaller fixs I don't know anything about need fixing.

Re: Slips out of gear and.....

popping out is probably a worn clutch dog and forward gear.
That can be a pricey repair.

Fuel pump I'm sure you could get, or borrow off the other engine.
And the handle, does it have an adjuster screw by the throttle gears?

Re: Slips out of gear and.....

My first post was exactly the same problem on a 1960 10 horse evinrude. the clutch dog and forward gear were worn. I bought a new forward gear for $65 and turned the clutch dog around to fix the problem. The shop wanted $115 for a new clutch dog; the used ones were shot. Forward and reverse works just fine after the change.

I got the parts from:
www.twincityoutboard.com
600 Canterbury Rd S
Shakopee, MN 55379-1808
(952) 496-1951

You can get a repair manual from tradebit.com for about 10 bucks. Make sure the manual you buy covers the specific motor.

I know this post goes further than your shift problem, but those were the next set of questions I had.

Best of luck.

I will check the adjuster screw by the throttle gears and
I am going to look into switching the Fuel pump tomorrow, Thanks

Thanks for the advice, that doesn't sound bad price wise and I would like to get one of these motors running so I can sell it. so whatever option with what ever motor will work for me

I would check and see if tightening up your shift linkage would solve the issue first. You can switch the gears and clutch dog too and that will help.
