I have a 1989 125 hp Force that im confused about. I crank the engine but it cranks very slow even with a good charged battery. good cables and connections. I even replaced the starter because the old one started smoking and got very hot. I jumped the starter bypassing the soleniod and still slow cranking. Could there be a problem in the lower unit? Im lost and need help guys,,,, Oh yes very good compression on all cylinders.

Re: Slow Crank

Try dropping the lower unit.
I've seen the bearings go bad and make for very hard starting.

Re: Slow Crank

After following Jerry's advice and the problem persists, try removing all spark plugs.
If the cranking is normal, start installing the spark plugs one at a time while testing in between.
As soon the cranking slows to a grind, the cylinder with the last plug installed needs visual inspection.
Or better yet check compression at least on that cylinder. If compression is bad remove head and open and inspect.

Now, you claimed good connections. That term or claim means you disconnected all connection terminals clean them to bare and shiny metal and tightened back. You need to make sure you actually do this first before doing the above.

Did you resolve your problem? I am having the same

Was your problem resolved by looking at the lower unit?

Cliff you should start your own thread???
Tell us what wer'e working on?
Profile? Location?Salt,fresh water.
Details.
Do a compression test. Then a spark test.

Re: Slow Crank

always a good idea to get a volt meter first check the battery has 12.6v then put one lead on the starter positive bolt and the other on the grounding point on the motor. get a friend to turn the key 5 seconds max. if the voltage drops below 10v you have a electrical problem. move meter to the battery and crank for max 5 seconds if the voltage dropped at the starter below 10v but the voltage at the battery didnt you have a bad connection if the battery dropped below 10v you have a battery that needs load testing for free at a autoparts store. Low voltage to a starter will let the expensive smoke out.
As jiggz said theres "i think there clean" and theres "i removed all the conections including the ground and cleaned them till they were shinny"
