I have a 15hp evinrude that i have been trying to get running. I have rebuilt the carb new fuel pump, the needle valve is the one that was on it when i got it. Is the tip of the needle valve come to a point or is flat. It looks like the one that is in there might be broken. It is the only thing left I can figure that might be the problem.

Help us out, what type of problem are you trying to fix.
The needle valve looks OK to me.

it would would turn over but not run. spark is fine, seems to be getting fuel. I am thinking at this point i might need to pull the carb apart again and check the bowl.

Compression OK? Will it start if you squirt some fuel into the carb, spark plugs OK?

If it starts when you squirt fuel into the carb, I think you have a carb problem. When you overhauled the carb did you remove the core plug on top of the carb and clean the passages underneath. Did you set the low speed jet 1 1/4 turns out from lightly seated?

Did you get a kit that has the core plug in it? You might want to try the static setting of the needle valve first.
I use a 1/8" drill bit and drill though it and pop it out with a small punch inserted into the hole and pry it out. When you drill through it, be careful and do not let the drill bit go any deeper than the plug, you don't want to damage the tiny passages in there.

both of the screens that go in the holes get tightened right. I am looking through the carb right now and do not see anything being blocked. I will blow it out and see if i can get it super clean

Yes and no air when it's turned upside down. I've never tried this but have read it on this forum many times. Best of luck. Rick.

I did a compression check. it looks to be 110 psi top and bottom. i can see spark on the plugs, i can smell fuel on the tip of the spark plugs. It will kick but not actually start. the ball is hard so i know fuel is in there.

As far as core plug go, install dome side up. Now take a brass drift and lightly tap with hammer in till about 1/2 flat. It won't take much. Now you can either use fingernail polish around the edges or some OMC sealant. Good luck.

did you link/sync when you put the carb back on? <carb link roller is centered on timing cam mark as the throttle plate begins to open, at wot the throttle plate is horizontal and the roller is on the highest spot on the timing cam>..if so..try this for a starting procedure...engine in neutral, choke pulled fully on...advance the twist grip as far as the neutral start allows...you should get it to at least attempt a start after 3 or 4 pulls..if it does this..reduce to 1/2 choke and pull, hopefully it'll start...did you look through the passage that the idle mixture needle screws into while you had the core plug out and was it clear?...all fuel consumed flows through the main jet and it's got to be as clean as you can possibly get it...for further insight google...LeeRoy's Ramblings...read his sections on 9.9 and 15 hp. engines

Also, did you replace the bushing that is in that slow speed jet? It is a very small plastic funnel looking piece.
