small cracks on coils

I have a 1986 force 50 outboard, and I've noticed the coils are starting to develop small cracks around the outside. The motor runs well until it warms up, then it bogs. Ive replaced every part on the entire engine, except these coils, they are kinda pricey. what caused this cracking? and do the cracks affect the perfomance?

Re: small cracks on coils

Mine has cracks too, but I have not noticed any problems because of it, it depends on the nature of the cracks..

Try getting a spray bottle and lightly spray them while the engine is running.. does that cause problems???

The previous owner of my motor filled the cracks with silicon, and it seems to have worked.. but if there are any probs, I will swap it for my spare..

good luck, I'd like to hear how you go..

Are you sure its the coil? bogging down at hight rpm could be alot of things. one of which is fuel..

abit more info might help us come up with better suggestions.. describe the bogg down, how and at what point does it bogg down?

Did it work well previous to that? have you done compression tests? etc etc..

any info you give will help narrow down the suggestions.

rgds

frank

thanks for the info, im gonna try to lightly spray the coils when its running. now about the bogg, the engine runs perfect for about 15 minutes, and when normal operating temperature is reached it just runs like crap. Ive just had a complete tune up by a local shop. The compression is great, the other thing I,ve noticed is the battery goes dead really quick.

Force2,
I had the same type problem with my 88 Force 125 HP, it would run fine, but for about 30mins to an hour and then it would cut out, like it was running on 2 cylinders. I checked everything inside out of this thing, and finally replaced the new battery that I had just put in, and it ran perfect.

I have since added a second battery so that this won't happen again, and an onboard battery charger that I can plug in to the wall at any time.

It now runs flawless. Take a look at the battery and see if that is your problem to. It about drove me crazy trying to figure it out.

Thanks,
Bryan

Well, that tends to indicate a charging problem.

you say the battery goes dead quick.. what are you running off it apart from the motor?

have you tried hooking up a multimeter to the battery and testing voltage before and after starting the motor? (it should be 12.something with the motor stopped, and 13-14.something when its running..) that will at least tell you if your charging system is doing anything..

Have you checked your battery with a Hydrometer? it might be clagged.

get a can of CRC and spray around the carb gaskets area,, if you hear a sudden increase of revs, you may have a air leak that becomes more noticable at high revs..
(though thats probably not that likely, its certainly possible.)

rgds

Frank
