Smaller Oil Resevoir for 40 Hp Johnson?

I just purchased a 1991 Johnson 40 Hp short-shaft for river use on a big Jon boat. It has oil injection, which is great. I love the motor, love the concept, BUT.....the Oil Jug holds like two gallons of oil....enough to treat 45 gallons! I fish like 5 times a year--I would be lucky to use 20 gallons of gas all summer--!

Does Johnson, or anyone, make a SMALL, tiny, Oil resevoir, like they have on injected snowmobles, that are SMALL, SMALL, SMALL? I only burn about 2.5 gallons of gas ALL DAY--and want a small oil jug-rig, that still has the low oil warning, but it very SMALL. PLEASE HELP, e-mail direct, tell me where to get one, or how to rig it!

Thanks, Paul

That's the smallest they make Paul...1.8gal. The next is near 3gal. It's either keep what ya' got or go to premix and get rid of the oil reservoir.

And....Welcome to iboats!

EDIT: Bomby does make a separate oil system. It's about a quart bottle that is inline with the fuel supply line. Ran one on my old 84' 50hp. It's safety is that if the bottle runs outta' oil, the fuel is automatically shut off from the engine. It's called Accumix. 'Bout $130 American.

Thanks for the speedy suggestion(s): I like your idea, of the aftermarket product you describe, but I cannot find "Bomby" or "Accumix" on the Internet--can you give me some more clues? Thanks, Paul (info@crossroadsagency.com).

I think by "Bomby" the writer means Bombardier. I don't know if the Accumix unit is still available from your Johnnyrude dealer, but it used to be.

The original, however, did the mix at 100:1, and that's not recommended any longer for any Johnnyrude. So...if you find a used one, make sure that it's a 50:1 mixer.

These were designed for folks using a kicker motor on a boat that had a gasoline tank holding gasoline only, as in an i/o boat. By using the Accumix unit, you didn't have to have a separate tank for premix.

Googling for "OMC Accumix" (no quotes) will pop up some links.

The unit is still available from any John/Rude dealer if ya' don't find it any place else. And yes.....Bomby is short for Bombardier.....the now owners of John/Rude engines.

Re: Smaller Oil Resevoir for 40 Hp Johnson?

Alright--thanks for all the ideas. One or two people gave me the idea to just disconnect the Oil Injection, and go back to mixin'. I figured out how to disconnect the oil line, and found the factory included "cap" or plug under the hood. Is there any trick to disconnecting the alarm wires--cut them, keep the ends separate and tape them up? What is going to keep them happy? Thanks. Almost there now ! Anyone wanna buy my old resevoir set-up?

Vanrat,

I must be missing something. What is the problem with a 1.8gal tank? Are you worried the oil is going to go bad? I have both a premix Johnson and an injected Yamaha. One of the best things about the Yamaha is that the oil is added after the carby. This means the carby keeps cleaner. If you are going to premix or a precaby mixing system then you may need to take more care since a blocked carby=ruined cylinder.

Re: Smaller Oil Resevoir for 40 Hp Johnson?

Thanks for responding. Nope, your not missin anything--I am just trying to keep a 16 foot Jon boat dedicated to serious river fishing light, streamline, and clutter free. I hate the 1.5 Valdeez resevoir in the back of the Jon. I wanted to reduce it to like a pint or two rig, that I could mount on the inside surface of the transom, to keep it out of my way, and get rid of the big 1.5 'box'. I do hear you, about the injection process, and you have a point. I just thought, for simplicity sake, I would rip it all off, and switch over to mixin oil and gas, to simply the problem, and get this box out of the back of my Jon... make sense? If I had the 40 hp on a pontoon, this would be a great set-up, carry enough oil onboard for TWO FULL SUMMERS of use...but I only go through about 3 tanks of gas all summer, as I run up-river and drift back (Mississippi River-in Minnesota)
