smaller prop

hi gents im in need of alittle help here,
ive got a 17ft pilot fishing boat with a 55 jhonson and still the boat is not very quick the prop on it looks way to big, ive just been given a much smaller prop witch will fit but would it make the boat any faster.
any info would be great many thanks
