I have heard some talk about smart tabs and hydrofoil stabilizer, what are these, are they really that good, and where do I buy these? Is there a website that shows these smart tabs?

Re: Smart tabs

I just ordered a set today for my bowrider. I'll let you know how I like them in a few days. I believe they will help greatly on my boat.

Re: Smart tabs

They seem like they would work, but would they be beneficial on my 23' Imperial? It has a 171 hp volvo I/O. Which one is better, smart tabs or monster tabs?

One more question, In the store I have seen a product called a hydrofoil stabilizer that mounts just above the prop, does this serve the same purpose as these tabs? Thanks!!

Re: Smart tabs

Wdshaffer;

I could use a bit more information about your boat but let me assume that the boat is 23 overall length, running a v6, weighing about 3600 lbs, and top speed is low 40's, with a V hull.

Given these stats You should use the ST1290-60 not the 80. The part number describes the product: ST = Smart Tabs, 1290 = 12" x 9" plates, 60 = 60 lb actuators. The application chart would lead you to believe that the 80 lb actuators would be better, but since the boat is an i/o and the motor a v6 the weight balance is better than it would be if the engine was an outboard. If the 60 lb actuators (after adjustment) did not seem to give you exactly what you want then they can be excganged for 80's and they are interchangable If these stats are not close then let me know.

AS for hydrofoils, you can do a search on this site and find plenty of information. I am not a proponent. There are a number of people who think they are good. Your boat is probably too large to get any significant results from a hydrofoil. Also check this site for Smart Tabs and Trim Tabs. Or go to www.nauticusinc.com

Re: Smart tabs

Thanks Nautijon, you were close on my boat. Sorry I should have given more info. It is a 4 cylinder, top speed of 30 at 5100 rpm trimmed out. I dont like to run the motor that high for long, it tends to overheat. It runs best at about 4500 rpm, and I get about 22-25 mph. Will these smart tabs allow me to go faster at a lower rpm than 5100?

Re: Smart tabs

WDschaffer;

Just noticed that your are in Vermilian. Denny Braun owner of Sportsmans Outpost (4340 Liberty) would be a good person to let you know what the Smart Tabs do, as he has them on his boat. Anyway I assume that you do a fair amount of boating there in lake Erie. If so I do not need to tell you that the lake is a bit choppy most of the time.

I would also suspect that the 22 mph is right at the threshhold of your minimum planning speed. It is also a bit fast for the Lake Erie chop ( to be comfortable).

To be more specific regarding speed, I would guess that you will pick up about 2 to 4 mph, but more important is that you will be able to run the boat on plane, as low as 16 to 17 mph and the top end won't be such a stain as to cause over heating unless you have another problem.

Regarding the overheating,if this were my boat I would make sure the water pump impeller is in good shape and, the water flow is good. Your heating issue could also be cause by insuficient water pickup when the motor is trimmed too high. I do not know the specifications on your engine for Max RPS or heat, but generaly the engine should run between 140 F and 160 F. Much cooler than a car engine because if the boat is used in saltwater, the salt will begine to crystalize above 180 F and restrict the water flow. When I oppreated my boat in California ( salt water always) I flushed the engine with a low mixture of muratic acid and water for a few minuted ( 2 to 3 min.) Then with clear water for 10 to 15 min. This cleared the salt and other corrosion from the water passages.

What do you consider overheating?

When boating in Lake Erie the tabs will smooth the ride and eliminate the porpoising. Getting the boat to plane and keeping the bow down during acceleration is a given.

Nauti-John,

Sorry to agree with Nexus, but you site doesnt work for me either. Some times the site owner is the last to realize that their site is not working.
I use Netscape so make sure your site is tuned to accept all browsers?

Nexus,
I have never had any business with N.J. but just about all post on here, in reference to him or his product, are very positive. Just give him a call and skip the retoric.

U.D.

Re: Smart tabs

Site worked great for me and I just finished ordering a set for my boat. I hope I bought the correct set- I got the ST1290-80 kit as I have a 19' Center Console with a 150 on the back. It rides pretty good even in rough water as it is, but the tabs should make it even better. That will be a big plus for my family. I was able to take advantage of the factory special and saved 25% as well- Can't beat that!

I'll post the results when I install them.

UFM82

Re: Smart tabs

yeah I agree with the Netscape thing. There other ways to fix the html; but, just to prevent the error, a one-line change would fix it so that the page can be viewed on other browsers.

change the line...
nyURL='640.html'

to...
nyURL='ENTER'

Re: Smart tabs

There's only one hinge and the screw kit is obviously for the normal metal plate kit since the machine screws arent even long enough to protrude from the plate itself, let alone the plate and the hinge with room to secure a nut.
I am interested in the resolution to this issue. How was it handled? What was the explaination? Are you now satisfied?

Thanks,
Mark ... probable future ST client.

Re: Smart tabs

As of now I've received no response. I'm foregoing the call I'd really like to make for a couple of reasons. I'm at a clients site today and the conversation that is likely to ensue wouldn't be the most professional one. As well it seems that Nautijohn monitors this forum pretty closely and I'm waiting to see what action he takes.

Regarding the website: It's not a pure browser issue. It doesnt work for me in Internet Explorer, or Firefox (my browser of choice).... I'd be happy to sort it out for them if they resolve my product problem first.

That said..... I'm trying to only respond to one thread at this point. Maybe we can join these various threads into one.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=008837#000004

Re: Smart tabs

Hopefully he will take NO action based on what you have posted here. It would be unprofessional for him to handle it here.

I wouldn't expect any response until you contact him or the company and they are aware of the problem.

Now you want to consolidate all the other peoples' threads that you have contaminated with your complaints?, to make it easier for you to responds to them? You should have thought of that earlier and only posted in one thread, the one that you started.

Doubt you will get much sympathy here.

Re: Smart tabs

Not to perpetuate this thread but Nexus, you are going about this all wrong. A mistake was made (not just by Nauticus !!) and you have slighted the company without first giving them a chance to make it right. This issue can only be resolved by speaking directly to each other, and not making a big public display of your dissatisfaction. This issue has now become personal on several fronts and does not belong on this forum. Make the effort and call the company. I'm certain they will make it right for you. If they don't, THEN you have a basis for feedback on these forums. Keep on smiling everyone.
