Re: Smart tabs
WDschaffer;

Just noticed that your are in Vermilian. Denny Braun owner of Sportsmans Outpost (4340 Liberty) would be a good person to let you know what the Smart Tabs do, as he has them on his boat. Anyway I assume that you do a fair amount of boating there in lake Erie. If so I do not need to tell you that the lake is a bit choppy most of the time.

I would also suspect that the 22 mph is right at the threshhold of your minimum planning speed. It is also a bit fast for the Lake Erie chop ( to be comfortable).

To be more specific regarding speed, I would guess that you will pick up about 2 to 4 mph, but more important is that you will be able to run the boat on plane, as low as 16 to 17 mph and the top end won't be such a stain as to cause over heating unless you have another problem.

Regarding the overheating,if this were my boat I would make sure the water pump impeller is in good shape and, the water flow is good. Your heating issue could also be cause by insuficient water pickup when the motor is trimmed too high. I do not know the specifications on your engine for Max RPS or heat, but generaly the engine should run between 140 F and 160 F. Much cooler than a car engine because if the boat is used in saltwater, the salt will begine to crystalize above 180 F and restrict the water flow. When I oppreated my boat in California ( salt water always) I flushed the engine with a low mixture of muratic acid and water for a few minuted ( 2 to 3 min.) Then with clear water for 10 to 15 min. This cleared the salt and other corrosion from the water passages.

What do you consider overheating?

When boating in Lake Erie the tabs will smooth the ride and eliminate the porpoising. Getting the boat to plane and keeping the bow down during acceleration is a given.
