Anybody use one? I need it for iphone, mostly to enter text messages and notes.

The ones I have have seen so far, use a outside "service" where your voice message gets sent out, into the "cloud", converted to text and then sent back to your phone.

Part of the deal, (that I'm not crazy about at all) is that all our your personal contact information gets uploaded, and deciphered, (and permenantly stored on a outside server), so that if you say "John Smith", it will know to pull up this contact information, etc.

Is there and app that will do this locally on the phone, or is it too much processing?

Try Vlingo for the iphone.
I have the Droid X with built in T2Speech..love it. I speak replies to emails while driving, use it for searching and sending quick text messages.
Just have to double check what it THINKS you said..lol

I hear they're working on an app where you can actually SPEAK into the phone itself and the person on the other side will HEAR you!! I can't wait...:facepalm:

Sound's like it would be a really useful app - if this year was 1967. ;)

Smart phones are really just very small computers, that do a lot of things, not just make calls. Using them and entering in information manually via keypad, is combersome and distracting at best, but needs to be done.

Having a function that uses voice input, to enter information, verses key typing is a much needed addition, that has been years in perfecting.

And yes, voice commands are even used for making a PHONE CALL. Both safer and easier.

Re: Smartphone Speech-to-Text Converting App.

I have downloaded Dragon dictation and downloaded/purchased the Vlingo package ($10). Intend to use both.

Dragon is easily used, for dictation (hence the name), but will copy and paste, which works fine for "notes" etc. To email and text, etc, is a lot more work, because you manually have to entery recipients name/number.

Vlingo will actually take the voice input, automatically convert it to text and then insert the text, into a text message, email, map, facebook, twitter or search.

Speak something like "text sally message how about lunch" will create an SMS text message to Sally, with "how about lunch". Hit send (if the message is correct) and thats it. Vlingo also makes a totally hands free app that will convert text to voice, but it is available (for free) only for Android, not iphone.

thanks everyone

My Thunderbolt has speech to text built in. Works very well. Sometimes too well, like when the radio is on. It will pickup my speech plus the the sports talk guy at the same time.

my dad uses a text to speech app on his droid.....the problem is that he doesn't check what it types....and his messages make NO SENSE most of the time!
