I have a 1987 Stingray with a 305 200hp Merc v8.

The boat was previously used in salt water and i purchased it for use on in-land lakes. The boat runs, starts, and works great however it overheats QUICKLY. I took it to the marina to have it fixed thinking it was the thermostate, because when I first put the boat in the water, it ran COLD causing it to bog down at higher RPM's. The 2nd time I had her out on the water, she Ran fine at all speeds, but overheated quickly. The Marina replaced the thermostate, but the boat is still heating up fast and smoke is coming out near the carburator..what could be wrong with it?

Thanks! Kris

Your exhaust manifolds may be clogged. The impeller should also be checked.

Is the water flow coming out of the exhaust/stern a good flow? If yes, the impeller may be ok, start with the manidolfs first, else start with the impeller first.

Re: smoke coining out of carberator

Kris,

Another possibility on those legs is that at some stage in it's past it's had an overheat because of a lack of water (to the impeller). When this happens the exhaust is not cooled, by the water coming through the elbows, and the hot exhaust gas travels all the way down the exhaust system, ie through the leg. One of the things inside the leg is a 'water pocket cover', made of plastic and very susceptible to distorting when heated. That allows the edges to 'lift' and allows exhaust gases into the cooling system when your moving along. The easiest way to pick this problem up is to put a piece of clear hose in the water inlet line, which runs from the transom plate, along the port side of the engine under the exhaust manifold, to the oil cooler for the steering pump then to the water distribution block at the front of the engine. I'd go to the local hardware store and get about 3 feet of the right diameter tube and fit it in place of the hose between the oil cooler and the water distribution block (thermostat housing, but it does more than that). With the boat on the water, this trick won't work on the flushes, just look for a solid water stream. If you have any air bubbles in there, you have to start looking for the source.

Keep us posted.

Chris..........

I would Check Output of the raw water Pump from the Stern Drive. Pull the hose that comes from the Stern drive into the Thermostat Housing. Cold engine, Start it up in the water and see if you get Good water Supply. Thermostat has been replaced so next you might look at clogged exchangers at the Exhaust manifold. Re-connect the hose and start the engine up again. Feel the Tops of the risers, Both should warm/hot up fairly close to the same time and same Temp. Hows the water flow out the exhaust ??

Thanks for the help guys, I took it back in the shop and they said that it is now the impeller that is bad, so they are replacing that, hopefully this will solve all the problems. I'll keep you posted

Thanks again!
Kris

Kris, The blowby hoses from the crankcase are in the area of the carb. They are 3/4" black corregated plastic, and normally emit some smoke. If it is thick, you likely have ring sealing problems.
