Hi guys
I have a Volvo penta SX ALT 42 2007 model 3.0
She ran okay for the first 5 minutes then I noticed smoke coming out near the flame arrestor, and the pipe
coming from the rocket cover.
Problem seemed to get worse so I turned her off for 10 minutes trying to work out what's going on,turned her over
but didn't want to start first go,but eventually did, made it back to the boat ramp, prior to getting there I noticed
tappet noise getting louder, swithched her of at the key,but wanted to pre-ignite.
Oil was okay prior to departing level was right too, temp seemed okay while cruising but seemed to crawl up a little, not sure what that means, maybe water pump not sure.
How can that happen so quickly,i also flushed the engine the previous day with the hose connection and motor running, everything seemed okay.
Can you help please
Cheers Frank

How bad is the smoke? video? That is crankcase vapors and they are supposed to be there. Heavy smoke wouldn't be right but then your definition of heavy smoke might be different than mine. Generally overheat at idle and cool down at speed is a bad impeller.

Thanks Walt
Can't do a video, have her tucked away and not willing to start her at this stage, the smoke shouldn't be there,as it was coming from the hose that leads to the flame arrestor on the carbie, pulled the hose of the rocket cover and smoke was coming out from there too.
Another thing I noticed the pipe that carries the water from the head which is shaped like a L to the stern drive at the rear seemed really hot, shouldn't it be cool, the rubber pipe that runs along side it, was touching up against it,and if left there would eventually melt away.
Then the tappet noise started and i turned her off.

First pull the plugs and check for water/rust.
Then do a compression test.
The "smoke" is probably blowby.
A small amount is acceptable.
A lot,NO.
Drain the oil and see if there is water or gas mixed in.
Post your results.

Thanks Jerryjerry05
The plugs seemed a little on the dark side,no water or rust so I pulled them and gave them a clean and put them back in,as I didn't have any spares available but will need changing when new ones arrive,i have a set ordered .
Taking her in to the marine mechanics tomorrow (Tuesday),see what they think
Don't have the equipment for a compression test.
Will keep you posted.

Had to cancel todays appointment with boat mechanic as I had another personnel issue to deal with,
but I did find out the exhaust pipe leading from the motor is not supposed to get real hot, when water is passing through it.

Volvo usually has temp sensors on the exhaust risers. They will be the first thing to get hot when lack of water occurs sounding an alarm on the engine

Definitely done the impeller
Dum Dum ran it too long without water going through it.
$600 Oz dollars to fix,had a few other things done as well (plugs etc).
