Smoke from valve cover

I have smoke coming from the oil fill cap on my Mercruiser 165 IL6. There really isn't any PCV (positive crankcase ventilation). It has the older style valve cover where there is only a small hose connected to the carb. I was thinking of replacing the oil fill cap with one that has the capability of accepting a PCV valve and connecting it to the flame arrestor. Any suggestions/comments?

You're just seeing combustion gases.

What you are prposing will work. Just make sure you continue using a flame arrestor.

A pcv valve is to be connected to a large vacume source from the carberator. Then the hose you allready have is the filter for the air comming into your engine that the pcv valve removes., providing you do not have too much blow by.

I would leave it the way it is, pumping it back into the carb only fouls the carb. enjoy the smell!!!
