smoke in carb

1981 mercruiser 120.. i am testing my motor and i dont have the cover over ther motor and when i am at idel you can see smoke ot of the carb? now i dont have the engine cover or the air filter.. so my ? is, is it ok to have smoke come out of the carb?

Could be blowby coming from the valve cover vent hose that goes up to the carb or spark arrestor. I am not sure yours is plumbed that way but if it is and the engine is old then crankcase vapors would be my main suspect.

for some reason the motor never gets hot it only goes to 50 and motot is always cold not hot

just a thought but if the motor was winterized and you used fogging oil. I could be burn off of the fogging oil. just a thought...

the guy i bought it from out the wrong spark plug and it broke the pisting so i replaced the pistin but i dont know if that has something to do with it? i know its not buring oil and there is no water in oil too
