I've got a 99 bayliner V8 5.0 2 bbl carb Mercruiser, while on the water underway had a burning smell so I slowed down then white smoke came from the engine bay and stoped the motor, it was the starter. Ive got a new one and now it makes a growl noise in the motor when it is turning over, the engine is turning, checked the fly wheel and no missing teeth or damage....could it have broke the flywheel? Please help:confused:

It could be that you need to shim the starter out away from the flywheel. They make shims for that purpose.

Thanks don for replying so quickly, it almost sounds like the flywheel is rubbing, is it possible that the starter got so hot that it could warp the flywheel?

No. The replacement starter is hitting the flywheel teeth while it is running. Shim it.

I have tried all 3 shims and it is still making a noise, do I need to put more than 1 shim? The new starter that i bought is a mallory 9-15907, this is my 3rd starter in 4 years that I have owned the boat. The first was a ebay cheap starter..1 year, then a used mercruiser on ebay, then the mallory. Ive never had to use shims on the other starters

This noise is comming from the starter area, now with 2 shims in place, the largest and the smallest, it sounds like the bendix gear is enguaged:confused:

Kept shimming and seems to be it, the largest and the 2nd to largest did it

Glad you finally got it shimmed correctly, but I have one question. Are you using the correct starter bolts? The ones you should be using have a knurled, cross pattern on them. You should not be using regular, smooth-sided bolts. If you do, you'll be constantly replacing starters as the units move. no matter how tight you make the bolts. Hy

The pattern right below the threads? Yes, I tried the old and the new ones that came with the starter and both look the same

Re: Smoked the old starter, new one is turning the motor but makeing a noise

I just wrestled with this issue with my 84 Ebko. It was manufactured with a Mercruiser 228, 305CI 5.0 L Chevy Small Block. It was repowered before I got it with a '80 5.7 L 350CI Truck engine...non-marine. I discovered that there are two different flywheels with slightly different outside diameters, and the same number of teeth. There is a 12.75" and a 12.84" diameter wheel. It is not very well documented anywhere, and my local expert said a shim was unnecessary.
He had never used a shim on a marine starter. Obviously you have demonstrated that shims are indeed necessary sometimes.
