checkin the trim-tilt fluid level on my 2001 yamaha f115 tlrx ser# 68v l303984 s. raised the engine with the cowl switch and the black ground wire that runs from inside the mid section to the
lower mounting bolt started gettin hot and smoking. i had noticed before that the covering(insulation?)on the wire looked like it had been hot before. i had never seen it smoke before, and everything seems to operate ok. now that i've seen it smoke i dont want to run it. the wire connects (ends) with a connector to the lower mounting bolt and feeds down into the what i think is called the midsection. there is also another black wire and a small diameter rubber tube feeding into the same place. the burnt wire is on the starboard side of the engine. can anyone out there tell me what that ground wire grounds, and what could cause this situation, and the first few places one might look for the cause? as alway, thanks in advance, and thanks for the help you have given me in the past...Bill

Re: smokin wire

Not sure I can picture the wire you are talking about. The first place to start would be with the battery connections and battery connections at the motor. The current draw of the trim caused the heat and smoke. Also double check the trim connctions at the solenoids.

Re: smokin wire

sounds like a bonding wire, check all your engine grounds and mounting bolts.
that bonding wire is not designed to carry much current.

Re: smokin wire

I had he same problem this spring when I put my battery back in the rodbolt and ray are right on. turned out I missed a ground wire that had fallen behind the battety and was touching the aluminum. re attached and no more problems

Re: smokin wire

Re: smokin wire

Either the Yamaha fairy came by during the night or you may have tightened the loose connection while checking them.

Re: smokin wire

Ray and Rod You guys are great,

Once again found what I was looking for without having to post. 1999 Yamaha 90 2 stroke. This past weekend I was having a problem with my battery, not enough power to operate the tilt/trim, but when I connected a charger to the battery the T/T worked fine, took battery to AutoZone and they said battery was a goner and would not accept a charge.
Well just to make sure that was why T/T wasn't working, I stupidly connected my self-contained jump starter to my battery connections (but not the smaller wires), after I ran the Tilt/Trim I noticed smoke from the mid lower unit area. I immediatly unconnected the jump starter.
After reading these posts I realize that the smaller wires I did not connect to the jump starter were ground wires. Stupid me, I thought they were only bilge pump wires. I removed the rectangular plate on the starboard side of the lower unit and saw a black wire attached to the lower unit and 2 springs along with lint like material that must be a fiberous build up of water-bourne material, I thought oops this wire got hot and this material started smoking.

Am I correct in assuming that this was in fact a grounding wire under the plate, and that by not connecting all of the battery wires to the jump starter, I caused a short that caused the wire under the plate to overheat?
If so could I have caused any other problems???
The wire under the plate is in tact and I could see no other problem.

Thanks for any feedback on this.

Gary

Re: smokin wire

its a bonding wire not a ground wire, however it will try to be a ground if the engine grounds are not clean and tight.
only problem is,its not large enough to carry much current.
