I have a 1999 Johnson Ocean Pro that smokes when started 1st time for the day (10 foot cloud). Then runs fine rest of the day. I was told there are 4 recirculation check valves that could be clogged. Where do I find these valves on the engine?

has the motor ever been decarbed. i would try that first, could be excess carbon build up. it is common for a 2 stroke to smoke when first started. getting to the valves is an little complicated, and requires a service manual. try the decarb first, using a portable tank.

Decarb, take a can of seafoam put 3/4 of it in the gas tank, with only 1 gallon of premixed gas. put the rest in a spray bottle. start the engine, and let it come up to temperature. then remove plugs, and them some real good shot of seafoam into the cylinders, replace plugs, let sit 15 minutes. restart, and spray the rest of the seafoam into the carbs, so the the motor almost stalls, wait and repeat until the seafoam is gone.then take for a wide open spin. then put in new plugs, ad premixed gas to the tank, and take it for a wide open throttle spin. it is going to smoke like a house on fire, during this process.

afterwards recheck compression.

I decarb it the start of every season, so that's not it. I really want to test the check valves. Do you know where to find them?

De-carbing very often clogs recirculation check valves so that they will not function. You should always check, clean or replace them after a thorough de-carb. Follow the small hoses running towards the intake manifold; they lead to the valves.

Another consideration is that the residual oil and gas that pools after running the motor will drain better if the motor is stored in the running position rather than tilted.

I always leave the motor as you suggest for the same reason. If I understand you correctly, the check valves are externally located, no need to get into the engine to service these.

They are external. I have to move my fuel pump to get to the port side valves.

I used a quarter inch drive on a 5/16 deep socket and extension to remove them, I then soak them in SeaFoam.

You can test them in place with a syringe and clean them with alcohol and the same syringe if you follow the instructions in your service manual.

One last question, on the parts page you attached, item#16 (part#434927), does that check valve also have to do with recirculation and should it be checked too? Many thanks for your input!
