Took my boat out Tuesday and the exhaust smoked most of the day. It's a 1984 evinrude v4 140. It normally smokes a startup but goes away after it's warm. I trolled most the day and never got to open it up because of speed restrictions on the lake. The only thing different is that I installed a trolling plate. What's wierd is that when I got home and ran it on the muffs there was no smoke??? The smoke was white/grey. Thanks

Re: Smoking help

Smoke is more noticeable on cool damp days. It is also good to run at a high rpm to clear out unburned fuel. Either of those could cause more smoking than usual.

Ran it on the muffs today and only had a little smoke. Is there any reason a motor would smoke in the water but not on the muffs? Also checked all the plugs and they were a little dark. Only one was darker then the rest.

As stipulated in the previous post you need to give your boat a good run to clean it out.

Backpressure is the only difference,

is it getting up to temp?
Cold running due to a stuck thermostat will smoke.
