Hey guys...Looking for some help. Just restarted my 1990 90hp Johnson Outboard (4 Cylinder) after sitting for 7 years. I poured some STP Oil treatment into the cylinders a few weeks ago, then turned the engine over by hand. Then drained the gas tank, added new fuel and new plugs. The engine started but I'm getting a lot of smoke. The smoke also smells rancid. The only other thing I didn't do was change the oil in the tank (I have the separate oil tank that injects the oil automatically). Is the smoke and smell the result of the old oil? Any suggestions...

Thank You in advance.....

Re: Smoking Johnson Outboard

If the STP oil treatment you used was that thick gooey stuff I'm familiar with ,my guess is that after setting up in the cylinders that it played a big role in your major smoking issue.Don't know how much you added but hopefully not enough to gum up the ring grooves and reed valves. That and possibly the old reservoir oil that should have had the oil line to vro inlet reprimed before initial startup after seven years of setting.I'm guessing that the cylinders are well coked up as well and may need decarbing which will lead to more smoke until it clears out the cylinders. You should also remove and clean the plugs between run times while running through some clean fuel mix.I also recommend that you mix at 50:1 in your fuel tank until you can verify delivery from the vro oil reservoir.Unfortuantely yet again, that will lead to increased smoking if the oil reservoir is delivering but tons better that the risk of running it lean.

In the future, outboard cylinder fogging oil is what is recommended to use before storing and if not prepared for storage, either that or some tcw3 lightly and turned over a few revs by hand to distribute before initial fireoff after long storage.

I'd also recommend a compression test once you have cleared the cylinders out to insure that any rings aren't hung up.
