Evinrude Outboard Smoking
I have a 1997 Evinrude 25hp 3cylinder outboard. It's an oil injected engine but the previous owner removed the oil injection and coverted it back to the old mix oil in fuel tank system - I guess he had problems w/ oil injection system. My problem is that the engine makes blue smoke when I start it and it continues to make blue smoke when ideling. I've was mixing 50:1 but the last tank I tried running 100:1 :redface:but I still have the smoking problem. Any suggestions on what's causing the smoking and what mixture should I be using??? FYI, I had the compression checked and all the cylinders are good and I recently changed plugs. There is some oil that leaks out of the exahust.

Two stroke outboards smoke. You can use synthetic oil for less smoke, and it'll be better for the environment, since it breaks down in time.

However, do not drop the fuel:eek:il ratio to 100:1. Use 50:1. That way, your outboard will continue to run.

You can also make sure that your engine has the correct thermostat and that it is functioning properly.

A thorough annual de-carbon treatment starting now will almost definitely help.
