smoking related to motor tilt ???

I have a strange smoking problem with my 1996 Johnson 130 hp. It smokes excessively after idling for a few minutes with the motor tilted all the way down. If I bring the tilt up a few degrees, it seems to clear up. Carbs have been rebuilt, VRO replaced, fuel filter replaced, no anti-siphon valve, all hose clamps checked and replaced as necessary. Any ideas ? I have also noticed that the bottom plugs get soaking wet after just a few miuntes of idling. Can I use a hotter range plug to help the fouling at idle ?

Tricky,

With the tilt all the way down, the fuel tends to puddle in the lower crankcase-you know-gravity.

I WOULD NOT go to a hotter plug. That would only be a band aid and possibly a fatal one.

More than likely, you have leaking needle/seat assemblies in one or both carbs.

changing the tilt angle also effects the float level in the carb. Are the floats at the correct height. If you notice, a carbed outboard will idle faster trimmed up than trimmed down.

Re: smoking related to motor tilt ???

I checked the float levels very carefully when I rebuilt the carbs last year. I rebuilt the carbs for that very reason, but no change. I had the boat out again last night and the smoking is very bad at idle tilted fully down. I also noticed that in the down posistion, the motor is actually tilted inward noticeably, ie: it goes well beyond being just level. I am trying not to condemn the new VRO pump, but its getting hard not too. djohns: why would going with a hotter plug be a fatal mistake ? I have done it with cars and bikes in the past. Thanks for your input

Because a hotter plug won't become hotter till you run high sustained RPM about the time a too hot piston fries and catastophic damage happens way too fast to do a thing about!!!

Had the boat out again last night. If I keep the motor tilted so it's sitting basically level I get hardly any smoke at idle. But, if shut the motor off for even 2 minutes then start it again it pumps out HUGE amounts of blue smoke until I rev it up again. Any ideas ??

Disconnect the VRO oil supply line at the Motor. This is the one that comes from the oil tank and connects at the motor housing. Plug it up. Pre-mix some fuel and oil at 50:1 in a 6 Gal portable tank and hook it up. See what happens then. The alarms will go off, but that's OK for just testing it. If it stops smoking so much, then the VRO is the problem.
