I have a 1986 28 hp spl johnson. the motor run really well but seems to be smoking too much. i have just treated it with seafoam and i know it smoked more while i was doing that but it smoked a lot before i did the seafoam and it is still smoking a lot i dont know why . what could this be from. the fuel mix is 50:1 what can i do to fix this what things can i check. and what will it hurt to run it this way? are there any signs i should look for? i would just like to know what could cause this thanks guys.

Re: Smoking TOO much??

I think your worrying over nothing. Easy for me to say I know. It is a two stroke motor and they are supposed to smoke. If running in a barrel they always appear to smoke more than they appear to do out on the water. If it is too much for your liking on the water you may consider changing oil to a synthetic blend or a full synthetic. I switched to a blend and I think mine smoke less but can't substantiate that. A full synthetic will for sure make less smoke (I've been told). If it were a four stroke you would be right to be concerned ( bad oil rings) but a two stroke is a different thing and smoke is expected and not a sign of excessive wear. Best of luck. Rick.
